Assistant Swim Coach

The Dunn Loring Swim Team (DLST) is seeking Assistant Coach/Age Group Coaches to work with our swim team of approximately 200 swimmers for the 2026 summer season. The Assistant Coach/Age Group Coaches will work collaboratively as a team with the DLST Head Coach to create a positive learning environment.

Assistant Coach/Age Group Coach qualifications:

  • Previous coaching experience in a competitive swim league (swim instructor or coach certification preferred; priority for Assistant Coach given to high school graduate and/or non-NVSL swimmer)
  • Competitive swim experience
  • Strong knowledge of Northern Virginia Swim League (NVSL) and USA Swimming rules
  • Experience working with children of all ages and ability levels to provide differentiated instruction to meet swimmer needs and goals
  • Effective communication, organization, leadership, initiative, and collaboration skills
  • Positive attitude and approach to building camaraderie and good sportsmanship
  • Acquire/Maintain required certifications or trainings (prior to first practice)
    • Lifeguard, CPR/First Aid
    • Pool Operator certification (preferred)
    • SafeSport training
    • Concussion Awareness training

Responsibilities include:

  • Attend all practices, meets (Time Trials, NVSL Saturday Meets, Developmental Monday Meets, Divisional Relays and Divisionals), scheduled meetings and official team events (pep rallies, end of season banquet, coordinate participation of at least one Assistant/Age Group Coach at weekly events). One Assistant Coach will assist Head Coach at Divisional/Relay/All Star Meets (must be available through August 1st).
  • Manage assigned Age Group, including coordinating with Head Coach on planning and leading of appropriate skill-level practices, with priority on safety.
  • Maintain practice notes and coordinate with Head Coach to provide improvement strategies for swimmers.
  • Instruct swimmers on proper techniques for stroke, turns, starts and finishes. Work with junior coaches to provide focused guidance and demonstration of skills for swimmers.
  • Coordinate pool set-up and break-down for practices and meets (lane lines, flags, kickboards and additional equipment, and team areas with canopies).
  • Work with Head Coach to prepare for, and coordinate team during meets. Manage team area during meets, actively engage swimmers during the meet to include preparing swimmers for their races, foster team spirit, good sportsmanship and proper decorum throughout meet.
  • Provide swimmer weekly feedback from practices and meets for techniques to work on in practice, and recommended stroke selection for Monday Developmental meets.
  • Assist Head Coach with team operations, engaging with active communication in the coaches group, assisting volunteers, and general communication requirements as determined by Head Coach.
  • Maintain team and community areas at the Dunn Loring Swim Club facility. Monitor all practices, meets and events for safety.
  • Attend pre-season training with coaching staff.
  • Comply with all rules, policies, and codes of conduct of the Dunn Loring Swim Club, NVSL, and other swim club facilities.

Developmental Swim Lead Coach

The Dunn Loring Swim Team (DLST) is seeking a Developmental Swim Lead Coach to coordinate and lead the developmental swim team programs for the Mini Dolphins and Spinner Dolphins for our 2026 summer season.

Qualifications:

  • Previous coaching experience, with experience in stroke development (swim instructor or coach certification preferred; priority given to high school graduate).
  • Competitive swimming experience.
  • Ability to effectively engage with young swimmers and their parents in a friendly and motivating manner.
  • Effective communication, organization, leadership, initiative, and collaboration skills.
  • Positive attitude and approach.
  • Acquire/Maintain required certifications or trainings (prior to first practice)
    • Lifeguard, CPR/First Aid
    • Swim Instructor training
    • SafeSport training
    • Concussion Awareness training

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and lead a multi-week DLST developmental swim team programs for the Mini Dolphins and Spinner Dolphins, with assistance from DLST Head Coach, with priority on safety.
  • Prior to start of program, coordinate swimmer evaluation sessions, will assistance from DLST Head Coach.
  • Develop practice plans and coordinate coaching/swimmer groups for practice sessions with a focus on stroke technique for freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.
  • Encourage participation in Developmental Monday meets as appropriate and coordinate team for end of season Mini Meet and Blue & White Meet.
  • Provide weekly feedback for swimmers and parents.
  • Coordinate organized activities to build camaraderie and confidence; encourage swimmer participation in DLST social activities and events, including pep rallies, and end of season celebrations.
  • Comply with all rules, policies, and codes of conduct of the Dunn Loring Swim Club and the NVSL.

Junior Swim Coach

The Dunn Loring Swim Team (DLST) is seeking junior swim coaches to work with our swim team of approximately 200 swimmers for the 2025 summer season. Junior swim coaches are swimmers first, exemplary role models and leaders on the team during the 13&Over practice, meets and social events. Junior swim coaches act as a coach during the 12&Under practices. They also assist with specific roles as assigned by the Head Coach.

Junior Swim Coach qualifications:

  • Current Dunn Loring swim team member
  • Competitive swimming experience strongly preferred
  • Positive. Energetic. Organized.
  • Willing to take initiative and demonstrated collaboration skills
  • Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid Certified
  • MAAPP/SafeSport Training/Swim Instructor Training (required by first practice)
  • Positive approach – winning is fulfilling but building a great team is how you measure yourself

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with daily practice sessions for the 12&Unders, including Mini Dolphins (flexible scheduling; schedule will be developed and shared prior to season start)
  • Provide instruction and demonstrate stroke technique to swimmers in assigned lane(s)
  • Assist coaching staff with pool setup and break down for practices
  • Take notes on swimmer progress and provide feedback to swimmers in assigned Age Group
  • Arrive to practice dressed to swim and plan to spend time in the water each day
  • Attend pre-season trainings with the other DLSC coaches
  • Comply with all Dunn Loring Swim Club rules and policies as well as the NVSL rules and standards of conduct
